When I had my first child in 1976, I experienced
childbirth and motherhood as completely lifechanging,
never to return to my old normal. When I asked
my mother how she managed with twelve children
of her own, she said “they all use the
same time.” She was right.
My two additional children did not take more
of my time, because all 24-hours, seven-days-a-week,
were already taken with motherhood. Looking
back on that period, pregnancy, childbirth,
and motherhood could be likened to an extreme
sporting event, requiring as much mental and
physical effort as I had to give. And with that
part of my journey, because of the demanding
physical, mental and emotional changes, came
new self-care requirements.
And then self-care expanded into care work
for others of all ages in my family -- my children,
husband, and parents, as they aged.
Along with being a mother, I am the owner of
Living Well Pilates here in Oakville,
a studio that has been serving clients (mainly
mothers!) for close to 20 years.
A primary focus of our studio is to equip our
clients with the tools to care for their own
bodies through increased physical literacy and
intentional movement.
At Living Well Pilates we
travel with each of our clients on their own
journey, with knowledge, understanding, and
support, as we teach Pilates in a small setting
with focused and tailored instruction. Our seasonal
schedules offer mat and equipment classes, weight
classes, virtual & in-person services, and
one-on-one privates, all in our beautiful newly
renovated Pilates studio in Glen Abbey.
LWP has a team of fitness
instructors and teaching assistants. We partner
with TSM offering in-house physio services and
Sujata-Kale Banerjea for Nutritional Services.
As a mother, I know first hand the importance
of having flexibility in your career. The ability
to set your hours, carve out time for school
pick up and drop off, while doing meaningful
work was essential to me as a parent. Becoming
a fitness instructor allowed me to meet the
demands of motherhood and take care of myself
and my community.
At Living Well Pilates we
have been certifying Pilates instructors for
10+ years. We offer small and hands on instruction
for our teacher training classes, as well as
practical & paid experiences for our teacher
trainers to work as teaching assistants in our
classes. Teacher Training students at Living
Well Pilates have gone on to teach
at other local studios, run their own virtual
practices, open full studios of their own, or
teach a few hours a week -- choosing the hours
that work for them and their family.
As a new mom, if you are looking at what’s
next for you in terms of both self care and
flexible work, becoming a Pilates instructor
may be right for you. If you are considering
it, please reach out and we can chat about options
for you.
